What is an irregular verb?

Definition

In short an irregular verb is a verb in which the past tense is not formed by adding the usual -ed ending.

Auxiliary verbs (to be, to do, to have) are often irregular in all tenses. Some other verbs are also irregular. This means they have an irregular simple past form and an irregular past participle, so they are not formed by adding -ed to the infinitive.
