What is a pronoun?

Definition

A word that is used instead of a noun or a noun phrase. Pronouns are often used to refer to a noun that has already been mentioned. 

Examples:

• He, she, it
• they, them
• it
• who
• ...

Use

A pronoun is used when you want to avoid repeating the nouns that are mentioned in the sentence. There are different types of pronouns in English. Which one you use depends on what you want to express and on the function of the pronoun in the sentence.

Example:

• Tom made a beautiful cabinet and Tom painted it black.
• Tom made a beautiful cabinet and he painted it black.
