Subject-verb agreement

What is subject-verb agreement?

Definition

In English sentences, the verb chosen must agree with its subject in form and meaning. So subject-verb agreement means that the subject and the verb match each other. In other words, the conjugation of the verb matches the subject.

Examples:

  • My friends are the best!
  • She is walking home after work.
  • The dog barks every time the doorbell rings.
