The present simple

Definition

The present simple is a verb tense with two main uses. We use the present simple tense when an action is happening right now, or when it happens regularly.


Formation


Use

We use the present simple when talking about states, characteristics, routines, habits or hobbies, general truths and permanent jobs.

Example:

  • Technology dominates the world.
  • English people drink lots of tea.
  • I get up at 7 o' clock.
  • Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
  • I work in an office.

The present continuous

Definition

The present continuous is a tense uses to talk about the present period and to say that an action is still going on. 


Formation


Use

We use the present continuous to say that a situation is temporary, changing or developing or to express irritation about a present situation. We often use 'always' in that case.

Examples:

  • At the moment Steven Spielberg is shooting a film in New Zealand.
  • The climate is getting warmer.
  • I'm always making the same stupid mistakes.
